About Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an holistic system of diagnosis and treatment which uses the body's own energy 'Qi' to adjust, repair and rebalance itself.

Originating in China, acupuncture dates back over 3000 years.  Acupuncture has been widely researched in China, America, Australia and Europe and is now used worldwide to treat numerous conditions or to maintain health and well being.

Traditional Chinese Medicine theory is based around the concept of 'Qi'.  Qi is an individual's life force or vital energy which flows throughout the body.  In health Qi flows smoothly, however if this flow is disrupted for any reason illness can occur.  By inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body acupuncture can correct the flow of Qi and stimulate the body's own healing capability.

Acupuncture is an individualised therapy, treatments are tailored exactly to each patient's needs.  Acupuncture can be used as a stand alone treatment or can safely be combined with conventional medicine.

What happens when I attend for acupuncture treatment?

Initial Consultation:

The initial consultation lasts approximately one and a half hours.  Detailed questions regarding your condition will be asked.  Your pulse is taken on both wrists and your tongue is examined in order to make a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diagnosis and formulate an individualised treatment plan.

The acupuncture treatment involves insertion of very fine disposable, pre-sterilsed acupuncture needles into specific points on the body.  Needles are left in place for approximately 20 minutes whilst you rest and relax.  The acupuncture needles are then removed and disposed of safely.

It is usual to attend for treatment once or twice a week to begin with.  The number of treatments required depends upon your condition, age and the duration of your illness.
